Project 3: Light
Architectural Design ll - ARC 257
The objective of this project is to design a non denominational chapel at Farmingdale State College, Where people of all faiths can worship and reflect. The design will control light to create a functional and beautiful safe space.

Light Background Research

The Design of Notre-Dame du Haut by Le Corbusier is defined by its sculptural form. embracing the asymmetry to evoke emotion and spirituality, making the chapel feel both modern and deeply contemplative.
The ceiling is shaped by the heavy, curved roof that appears to float above the walls, separated by a narrow band of light. This gap allows daylight to filter in softly, creating the illusion that the roof is weightless.

The light emphasizes the ceilng's sculptural form and enhances the spiritual atmosphere by drawing the eye upward

He designed thick, curving walls with small, irregular windows. Each opening lets light enter in a controlled, almost mystical way.

Site Selection

The church is located in between the Sinclair Hall and Hicks Hall. There's no buildings nearby to block natural light, making it the most adequate spot. Additionally, the area is away from the academic spaces, making it a quiet place.
